5. How can I avoid viruses and trojans?
- Purchase a good reputable anti-virus package such as Mcafee or Norton that gives you updates.
- Do not open files unless you know what they are, even if they seem to come from a friend.
- Do not open files attached to an e-mail if the subject line is questionable.
- If you feel you must look at the attached file, always save to your hard drive first and run the virus checker. Some virus scanners allow you to scan e-mails and their attachments directly from the Inbox.
- Delete chain and junk mails.
- Do not download files from strangers.
- Use caution when downloading files from the web. Make sure the company is legitimate and reputable.
- Update your anti-virus software regularly. Over 500 viruses are discovered each month.
- Make sure you keep your Operating System (e.g. Microsoft Windows XP) up-to-date with all the patches that come out.
- Back up your files regularly to a CD or floppy disk.
- ALWAYS be cautious when opening, downloading or executing files.
- Purchase a good reputable anti-spyware package such as Spyware Doctor or make sure you're anti-virus package contains Anti Spyware software.
- Purhcase a good firewall such as ZoneAlarm Pro or McAfee. Or make sure you're Windows Firewall is turned on and always up-to-date. If you are using a router - some come with an in-built firewall, but remember to keep this up-to-date as well.
